SUPPORT THE CHILDREN
The Save Our Hospital Campaign
Remember back to July 2012 when the government announced the NHS healthcare reform process. It would mean the closure of hospitals and A&Es around the country, to be replaced with GP led Urgent Care Centres. We discovered then from Shaping a Healthier Future, the NW London NHS consultation team, it meant choosing which hospitals and A&Es to close. In other words, no choice.
Charing Cross hospital was suddenly under threat of complete closure. It is an internationally renowned teaching hospital and centre of excellence praised by the Kings Fund for its high standard of specialist treatment. Hammersmith Hospital was faced with losing its essential A&E. This heralded the immediate start of our NW London joint campaign to Save our Hospitals.
We began the battle to inform residents and patients but without the genuine support of our local Council. The consultation gave the impression that A&Es would be affected but hospitals safe.
We needed their support to spread the word of what it really meant in every way possible. Crucially we needed the Council to leaflet residents but they refused when asked, on the grounds of cost. Few knew about the consultation or anything. It was only available online and inaccessible.
A group of Kensington and Chelsea Residents produced this wonderful leaflet. Its visual impact had an immediate effect for people who found it difficult to believe. Now we are faced with this as a reality.
